Immerse yourself in the singing voices of Kammerkór Suðurlands (South Iceland Chamber Choir) and singers from Southbank Centre’s Voicelab in Surrounded by Strangers.

The piece asks both performers and audiences how it feels to be surrounded by strangers, addressing themes of loneliness and alienation in this increasingly busy, hyper-connected world.

Looking into these issues that plague modern society, Norwegian composer Eyvind Gulbradsen has developed Surrounded By Strangers in collaboration with Kammerkór Suðurlands (South Iceland Chamber Choir) and their Musical Director, Hilmar Örn Agnarsson, alongside singers from Southbank Centre’s Voicelab.

Audiences are invited to dive into this vocal testimony, wandering through the performance space. Instead of following a formalised framework, the piece creates space for the singers’ individuality, eccentricities and expressions.

The result of this collaboration is a remarkable, personal and emotional experience which brings audiences face-to-face with performers laying themselves bare.

Initially developed in Iceland as part of a collaboration with Eyvind Gulbradsen as part of the Moving Classics European Network for New Music commissioned residencies.

This performance will be made possible with generous support from the Embassy of Iceland in London and Southbank Centre.
